What is the Great Transition?
The term "Great Transition" was first given prominence in this context by the Global scenario group (GSG), an international body of scientists convened in 1995 by the Tellus Institute and Stockholm Environment Institute.
What they and numerous other researchers and authors are suggesting is that the trends of the last few centuries are coming to an end. We are in the early stages of a transformation no less world changing than the earlier transitions to settled agriculture and industrial society.
It is a Transition that is being precipitated both by necessity and by possibility.
It represents the end of an era of massive economic and population growth stimulated by an abundant supply of cheap fossil fuel energy. We face a convergence of interrelated global stresses that we can avoid only in our short-term attention spans. We can't stop the Great Transition, but we can still have an impact on the future... at the very least, our own futures.
To think that business as usual can continue on a planetary scale is merely the psychology of denial as you will see if you examine the evidence in Wise Up - The Crash Course.
Out of the turbulence of this transition, very different forms of society could emerge. The choices we make over this next critical decade could set the trajectory of global change for generations to come. What that world is like depends in part on whether those living today contest the current roles of transnational corporations and governments... whether tipping points are reached with enough people freeing themselves from the old beliefs and values that have created the predicament we find ourselves in.
It's merely a common fallacy that all we need to do is find the right technological fix. It all goes deeper than that.
I won't sugar coat it for you. While the future can never be predicted with precision the science is indicating that all plausible scenarios for the future are going to be rough rides.
It is essential that we Wise Up and prepare for the Great Transition.
What is TransitionWise.org?
It is a website to help people wise up to the current world situation. The Wise Up course reveals the big picture and offers strategies and ideas to help people start to respond wisely. Updates will alert you to important news particularly related to Australian impacts. The comments function (and later a forum) will help people with similar thinking connect and possibly start to support each other.
As I say in About Us... TransitionWise.org was founded to help people faced with the need to prepare for and manage major changes in their lives and the world which have only just begun with the GFC of 2008.
It is prompted by my personal experience of living in a country which was undergoing economic collapse (Russia in the early 90s) and what I have learnt about our current predicament from reading around this subject about a hundred books and thousands of articles and websites. I also draw on what I have learnt from my own preparations so far.
I offer it as a free public service. It takes a lot of time to develop, update and keep improving a resource like this. If you find the Wise Up course and other resources valuable then think about how you could support this project.
Might be an email of appreciation, an offer to donate, or perhaps, most constructive of all, find a group or organisation that you are involved with and get them to invite me to present a customised version of Wise Up. See Services.
Who is it for?
Anybody who is able to access and read the site can benefit from it.
Anybody who suspects the government and the mainstream media is not revealing the full nature of our situation will find it interesting.
And it is particularly relevant for people looking for the Australian perspective on these issues. While my outlook is global, having spent over 10 years living, working and travelling in 40+ countries, I know Australia best.
